Lessons learned from some of the wealthiest men in the world (Part 3)

Coming into Part 3 of the lessons learned from some of the wealthiest men in the world, I am once again reminded about how often we find ourselves searching for the latest leadership training material, latest tag words used, and all the things that will help us to better understand when to do what. However as I have also realised when teaching on leadership, the majority of the information shared are not necessary new information but rather confirmation of what we already know; just presented in a different way. What we do realise is that very little of the things that we so much agree with, we just for some weird reason do not apply. It’s like we acknowledge the value, but the application is left behind until someone reminds us of it.

My sincere hope through the five(5) part series is that the notes shared will not just remain theory, but that we will actively apply these values into our daily dealing with people around us…

The two men who’s notes I am sharing today were amongst my favourites.

What fascinated me most about Andy’s teaching was that every speaker after him were applying the steps guidelines he gave us. Whenever a new speaker started I was going back to my notes and I could follow how they went through almost every single step; Create an Impact by presenting yourself as confident, someone who understands the topic he is about to speak on, and give a thorough background as to why you qualify to speak on the topic; Inform the People by giving high quality information about the topic that will equip the listeners with content that can be applied in their own areas of influence; Inspire for Action through the telling of stories and personal experiences, allow the listeners to generate questions in there minds that allows them to be engaged in the conversation, if possible have someone from among the listeners contribute in the discussion by shearing their own experience and understanding of the topic; Pitch for Action by giving tangible action steps can be applied in order to transform theory into practice, provide a viable platform that can be used towards either a better understanding on the topic or for the application of the theory.

“Turn experiential knowledge into pockets of information that people would want to buy from you” (Andy Harrington).

“You are your own brand, always perform on your peak when speaking in front of people, that’s if you believe in your brand” (Andy Harrington).

There are five(5) steps that can be followed to assist in a stress free speaking session:

S – State (Your emotional state is vital in communicating a positive attitude towards the topic you believe in)
Y – Yourself (Be yourself as you share your story, your lessons learned, mistakes made and experience gained)
S – Stance (Presentation through body language has a direct connection to value of content shared)
T – Tonality (The tone of your voice and variety in which you apply it can and will have an impact on the message communicated)
E – Eye contact (By selecting a few key people at different strategic points whom you regularly look into the eyes, as well as browsing through the crowd as you are moving between them, helps all listeners feeling engaged)
M – Movement (If the presentation allows for moving around on stage, it should be done diligently and at a comfortable pace for the listeners to follow. They are not attending a tennis match…)

When speaking, allow the application of commas and fullstops, this gives the audience the opportunity to think on what has been said; turning them into participants and not mere listeners. A brief pause after making a thoughtful statement often generates an opportunity for the listeners to relate.
